Dungeness Crab Season–2013

So… it all started 2 weeks ago when there was an article about the Dungeness Crab being in Season, which usually falls around thanksgiving Week. Apparently, its tradition around here, in SF, to have Crabs as part of their Thanksgiving Dinner.

Heh, I don’t know about that, I’ll be back home in SG ! Its getting cold here, season’s now into the Falls, or what we usually call Autumn. So, since Crabs are in Season, and Enzo was bored Stiff on a Saturday morning.

I decided to head down to Pillar Pier at Half Moon Bay to see if we can get some Cheap Crabs for ourselves!

So an hour’s drive later , we go to the pier!

Tons of people around, some having caught their own crabs, some having a super pinic & BBQ. And ALL having fun!

So we made out way to the pier and the boats and had to queue up to for 15~20 mins for our turn to buy Crabs, freshly caught from the pacific ocean!

People were buying 10~20 crabs and we were hoping they didn’t run out of crabs! Cost about 7 bucks a pound, which I think is roughly 14 bucks per Kg. The guys on the boat basically round off the crab weight in your favor and they even gave us a discount! We basically spent 25 bucks for 2 HUGE crabs that was totally caught fresh from the fishing boat the morning before. Very good deal in my opinion!

 

So after all that excitement, WE got hungry and had Clam chowder , Calamari and Fries by the beach. It was really good, if not for the damn cold weather. Everything that was hot got cold in less then 5 mins… sian..

Well Anyway, We got back home and decided to see how the Dungeness crabs compared to local Sri Lankan CRabs!

So 2 methods. STEAMED and Crab Bee Hoon (Melben Style)

Honestly, I prefer SRi Lankan Crabs! I think Singaporean Chili Crabs using Sri Lankan mud crabs is still better. The Dungeness crab has A LOT of meat, and it is very buttery and slightly sweet. Very strange, never really eaten seafood that has a taste of butter.And, this is when I Steamed the crabs, not that I put butter hor.

I think I still prefer Sri lankan crab meat. The sweetness cannot fight.

So, after 2 meals of crabs, I think I’ll stay away  from seafood for awhile hah, eat until scared!

Sanborn County Park

So With all the government shutdown and all that crap. The only thing that affects me really, is that the National Parks are Closed!

Well, no matter, there are some nice enclaves of smaller parks around. Sanborn is a short 20 mins drive from my place. And Claire and I took Enzo for a Leisurely “hike”  up the woods. Really beautiful and serene place.

 

This is definitely the place for a weekend Camp during the Summer and BBQ. It’s a little too cold now for that, there are still people out here doing that.

From VERY FAR AWAY, I snapped a shot of Claire and Enzo waiting for me whilst I was scouting ahead. The shot wasn’t sharp cuz I just came walking back from a steep climb, it was full extended at 300mm and the shutter speed was really low due to the light. All in all, shld have done better, but oh well.

The colors of fall is showing and I cant wait to see the autumn leaves!

There were some Deer or what ever they were, I drove by and Claire spotted them. We were already on our way home, but I had to take some pictures, so I pulled over, yanked out my 300mm Lens and fired away. Din really get any good shots, perhaps only 1 or 2.

Enzo and the Big Sur!

It’s almost the end of Summer here in the Californian State of San Francisco. We’ve been too busy really to venture out further then where we live in Santa Clara. But this weekend, I’ve decided that we must head out and give Enzo a break from the small place that he stays in 24/7 =)

So we Drove towards BIG SUR , and PLANNED to head towards Pfeiffer Falls. Its supposed to have been a 2 hour drive but with all the stops and all, it took more then 3 1/2 hours. But its all well worth it!

First Stop

was along Highway 1. It was really breezy and Enzo Start out ahead of us, turning back to check on us occasionally, Flashing a mini smile when he sees us !

Happily Grazing around, enjoying the cold breeze with the whiff of Lavender and Mint from the flora around!

Second Stop

Bixby Bridge!

 

So After driving for about 3 hours, we Finally reached Big Sur State Park. Really beautiful Drive in  and since it was late, we had to grab a bite!

 

 

And this was  right beside the River!

So After having a good Lunch, time for some stream actions.

The water was actually cold but Enzo’s used to getting his Feet wet , so he looks totally comfortable in the water!

 

As Usual, Enzo’s looking at everything and anything, but the CAMERA…

Cant Find Pfeiffer FALLs, Time to head back!

A good scenic drive, a great Lunch by the Streams and too lazy to Hike and find the Pfeiffer Falls. So Decided, to head back and see if we can get some Fishing done before the end of the day. =)

So, We headed towards Carmel by the Sea, which is on the way back home, and whilst it wasn’t possible to fish there due to the irritating KELP, at least, Enzo and MX had fun on the beach.

Enzo’s new enemy is the Waves that gets him wet! He’s barking and clawing at the water all the time!

 

 

Found a nice spot to Attempt Fishing, but dint work out, so might as well take some pictures since we were here!

As you can see, he’s obviously having fun @ the beach!

And after a great Sunset by the beach, time to head home!

After a FULL WASH UP, Enzo’s Batteries went totally Flat. Wont move even he u walk past him.

So, that’s his super Saturday , with the Cliffs, the Rivers and the Sea, All in one day. I’ll bet that he’ll be dreaming about this when he sleeps..
